The Scholars for a Healthy Oregon Initiative was established in 2013 by the Oregon Legislative Assembly in order to address two critical challenges in education healthcare providers: the high cost of tuition for students and the regional disparity of providers across the state. You can make a difference with your degree by applying for the Scholars for a Health Oregon, DO (SHODO) scholarship. Designed with both the student and Oregon workforce in mind, SHODO provides WesternU COMP-Northwest students with a unique opportunity to help address healthcare disparity in the state.
The SHODO scholarship, for a limited number of osteopathic medical students at COMP-Northwest, is $42,000 each year for up to three years of osteopathic medical school. In return, recipients agree to practice in a rural or underserved community in Oregon for the total years of funding received. Accepting a SHODO scholarship is a serious commitment and a great reward, but also a very real opportunity to help make a difference in one of the medically underserved or rural areas in the state of Oregon.
You are not required to do a primary care residency. However, specialized opportunities will be limited in underserved and rural communities. Practice obligation begins within 90 days following residency completion. Scholars will be able to apply to a variety of underserved sites in both rural and urban settings. Recipients will need to contact the Oregon Office of Rural Health for assistance finding placements.
You may apply to the National Health Service Corp, PCLF, or other obligated scholarships in addition to applying for the Scholars for a Healthy Oregon, DO. However, you may not accept more than one scholarship with a service obligation. If accepted to multiple programs, you will need to decline all others in order to participate in SHODO.
