Loan repayment for primary health care professionals in the state of Wisconsin

Health care professionals (physicians, psychiatrists, dentists, dental hygienists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and certified nurse midwives) in Wisconsin can receive up to $100,000 in education loan assistance through the Health Professions Loan Assistance Program (HPLAP).

Over 150 primary care professionals practicing in Wisconsin's federally-designated Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) have received over $5 million in loan repayment awards since the HPLAP was established in 1990. Information on a community’s HPSA status can be found on the federal Health Resources and Services Administration’s HPSA site.  Applicants generally must be working in a HPSA to be eligible for a HPLAP award.  Providers must agree to work three years in an eligible underserved rural or urban community.  Awards are federal and state income tax exempt.

  • Agree to practice primary care in a primary care site located in a HPSA
  • 3 years in a federally designated Health Professional Shortage Area (from the date award contract is signed.
