Loan repayment assistance to primary care providers in the state of Kansas

The Primary Care Office in the Bureau of Community Health Systems receives funding from the federal Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) through the National Health Service Corps to administer the Kansas State Loan Repayment Program (SLRP). The program provides loan repayment assistance to health professionals with qualifying educational loans.

Eligible professions include primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurse mid-wives, dentists, dental hygienists, clinical psychologists/clinical psychotherapists, clinical social workers, clinical professional counselors and clinical marriage and family therapists.

To be eligible for an award, health professionals must commit to provide health care services at an eligible site located in a federally designated Health Professional Service Area (HPSA) for a minimum of 2 years. Employment must be with a public or nonprofit private agency or facility. The practice site is required to maintain an open door to all residents, regardless of their ability to pay or their pay source.

  • The health professional must have completed the appropriate level of education and must be able to become board certified or otherwise state or professionally credentialed prior to beginning the obligated period of service.
  • The health professional must be a United States citizen or national.
  • The following health professionals are eligible to receive a Kansas SLRP award:
  • Must serve in a primary care Health Professional Shortage Area—Doctors of Allopathic Medicine or Osteopathic Medicine (M.D. or D.O.) in a primary care specialty, Primary Care Certified Nurse Practitioners, Certified Nurse-Midwives, and Primary Care Physician Assistants.
  • Approved primary care specialties are family medicine (and osteopathic general practice), internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, geriatrics, and general psychiatry. General practitioners (physicians who have not completed residency training programs) are not eligible for funding through the Kansas SLRP.
  • Must serve in a dental Health Professional Shortage Area—General and Pediatric Dentists (D.D.S. or D.M.D.), Registered Clinical Dental Hygienists.
