Pomona youths check out health careers

Jose Camacho thought about being a dentist someday, but after his visit to Western University of Health Sciences on Saturday, his possible career choices expanded to include pharmacist, veterinarian and even doctor.

The Cortez Mathematics and Science Magnet School sixth-grader never considered being a doctor, he said. Now it is a possibility "because I learned the things you could do," Jose said. Jose was among a group of about 30 sixth-graders and their parents from across the Pomona Unified School District who attended the first in a series called Saturday Linkage Academy.

The Academy, organized by Western University of Health Sciences, is the first phase of the Pomona Health Career Ladder. The Career Ladder is a long-term initiative that involves Western University, Pomona Unified School District and Cal Poly Pomona. The goal is to prepare students starting in seventh grade for a career in various health fields. Read the full story >>
