Western University of Health Sciences Associate Dean for the College of Pharmacy Earns Prestigious Award
Pomona, Calif. - 08/28/2006 -- Sam Shimomura, PharmD, associate dean for the College of Pharmacy, has been named the 2006 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award by the California Society of Health-System Pharmacists (CSHP).
"I am honored to be recognized by my peers at CSHP and look forward to working with pharmacy students and pharmacists to help our patients make the best use of their medications."
The Distinguished Service Award is presented at CSHP's annual conference, and recognizes a pharmacist who has made exceptional and sustained contributions to CSHP at the regional and state levels. The winner is selected by past recipients, regional chapter presidents and CSHP board members.
"Sam Shimomura has been a part of the glue that has held CSHP together for nearly three decades and part of the fuel for the engine that has kept CSHP moving forward," said Carey C. Cotterell, RPh, FCSHP, FAMCP, of Kaiser Permanente.
"Sam Shimomura is one of the best known pharmacists in California," said Max Ray, PharmD, former dean of the College of Pharmacy at Western University of Health Sciences. "He has been a practitioner and an educator for over 35 year, and he has influenced an entire generation of younger pharmacist. Among Sam's noteworthy contributions are his longstanding devotion to residency training programs and his encouragement to pharmacy students to consider taking post graduate residency programs; and his commitment to the teaching of ethics to pharmacy students and his dedication to the establishment of an ethical foundation for pharmacy practice."
Given Sam Shimomura's service to Pharmacy and the community, it should come as no surprise that he has been selected for this year's CSHP Distinguished Service Award. He began his career in 1970 and quickly distinguished himself as an active and committed member of the field by serving as Editor of CSHP's publication, "Voice," in the mid-1970s. He continues to volunteer his time today as the Faculty Advisor to the CSHP Student Chapter at WesternU. Dr. Shimomura has served as CSHP President, treasurer and board member and ASHP board member. He has also helped over 300 refugee Vietnamese pharmacists gain licensure in California and demonstrated a commitment to teaching ethics, professionalism and geriatrics. He has authored 67 articles and served as an adviser or editor on eight professional publications. Shimomura continues to influence the future of the pharmacy as an educator who touches the lives of pharmacy students every day.
Sam Shimomura received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of California at San Francisco and served on its faculty for 26 years. Currently, he is Associate Dean for Professional and Student Affairs at the WesternU College of Pharmacy.
The Distinguished Service Award will be presented on October 13, 2006 at the CSHP Seminar '06. The award will be presented at the morning opening session and a reception in Dr. Shimomura's honor will be given that evening.
