POMONA, Calif. - 03/20/2013 --
State Sen. Ed Hernandez, O.D., will present "The Changing Face of Health Care in California" at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 12, 2013 at Western University of Health Sciences' Health Education Center, Lecture Hall 2, 701 E. Second St., Pomona, Calif. 91766.
The presentation, which is free and open to the public, will include a brief history of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), state legislation, special session, options, obstacles and Covered California.
Sen. Hernandez is Chair of the Senate Committee on Health, and has authored several health care-related bills, including legislation addressing the serious shortage of primary care providers in California and legislation that would help implement the ACA in California by protecting consumers and expanding Medi-Cal coverage to include more than one million previously ineligible Californians.
"As a health care provider and as a state senator, I am glad that WesternU is providing this opportunity for students and graduates alike to understand the impact that current policies have on their work," Hernandez said. "We are working especially hard at the state level to implement health care reform and ensure that the people who live in low-income communities not only have affordable health care coverage, but also access to qualified health care providers when they need one."
The lecture will be video streamed to WesternU's COMP-Northwest campus in Lebanon, Ore., and will also be available for public viewing on WesternU's website, http://www.westernu.edu/lecture2/. Please check in shortly before 2:30 p.m. PST to watch the lecture.
"One of the important roles that health care educators play is helping to prepare our graduates for the changing health care environment," said College of Optometry Dean Elizabeth Hoppe, OD, MPH, DrPH. "Senator Hernandez provides a unique and valuable perspective to help us gain some insights that will benefit our students, and in turn, their future patients."
