WesternU to hold Free Community Health Fair
Pomona, Calif. - 02/27/2013 -- The third annual WesternU Community Health Fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013.
The free fair will be held along Western University of Health Sciences' Esplanade, 701 E. Second Street, Pomona, Calif., with free parking available in lots 26 and 27 near Linden and Third streets.
Approximately 160 students and preceptors representing most of WesternU's nine colleges will provide free screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar, diabetes, dental, osteopathic manipulative therapy, vision, foot exams, body mass index calculation, and more.
For the first time, the Student Government Association (SGA) and the American Pharmacists Association - Academy of Students (APhA-ASP) are combining resources to co-host the health fair, along with help from Target. APhA-ASP is receiving financial support from a Target Campus Grant.
Eric Gupta, PharmD, associate professor of Pharmacy Practice and Administration, College of Pharmacy, said about 250 people were screened at last year's health fair, and thinks this year's health fair could easily double that. "This is an example of WesternU's mission, bringing health care providers from all the different professions together to help people in need," Gupta said.
Second-year College of Pharmacy student Thomas Schuetz, SGA executive secretary, said he's excited that this year's health fair will be even bigger than in previous years, and said the pooling of resources and the Target grant APhA-ASP secured will be key to the success of the fair.
Other resources and educational opportunities will be available at the fair, including asthma and healthy living information, colorectal cancer awareness, emergency preparedness and heartburn awareness, and self-care education. Visitors also are invited to bring their medications, vitamins, and herbal remedies to a receive medication therapy review.
